A beloved classic, this definitive volume on the art of nonfiction writing celebrates its thirtieth anniversary.

ON WRITING WELL, which grew out of a course that William Zinsser taught at Yale, has been praised for its sound advice, its clarity, and for the warmth of its style. It is a book for anybody who wants to learn how to write or who needs to do some writing to get through the day, as almost everybody does. Whether you want to write about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, the arts, or about yourself in the increasingly popular memoir genre, ON WRITING WELL offers you both fundamental principles as well as the insights of a distinguished practitioner. With over a million copies in print, this volume has stood the test of time and remains a valued resource for writers and would-be writers.

William Zinsser is a writer, editor and teacher. He began his career with the New York Herald Tribune and has long been a freelance writer for leading magazines. During the 1970’s he taught writing at Yale, where he was master of Branford College. From 1979 to 1987 he was general editor of the Book-of-the-Month Club. His fifteen books, ranging from jazz to baseball, also include the influential WRITING TO LEARN. He now teaches at the New School, in New York.

Over one million copies sold: ON WRITING WELL consistently sells over 30,000 copies a year. Revised and updated six times over the course of the past 25 years, it remains current and relevant for new generations of writers.

Broad Readership: This is a book for professional writers in a wide variety of fields as well as students of writing at colleges and universities across the country. It is a valuable source book for people who write at work or for their own pleasure (and for their families) at home.

Entertaining & Informative: Not just a manual, but a personal guide to writing filled with humorous insights, anecdotes and quotes from writers like Norman Mailer, E.B. White and Hunter Thompson.

An Essential Reference Book: "ON WRITING WELL belongs on any shelf of serious reference works for writers-along with, say, Fowler's MODERN ENGLISH USAGE and Strunk & White's THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE." --New York Times
